Why are pronghorns endangered?

Their lifespan in the wild remains unpredictable with most of them living for 8 to 10 years on average. In captivity, they may survive for more than 20 years.

Pronghorn can detect movement up to 4 miles away. … A pronghorn can run up to 60 miles per hour, which makes them the second-fastest land animal in the world (cheetah – 61 mph). Although second to the cheetah, the pronghorn can sustain its speed for much longer.

The only true horns present in the animal kingdom belong to the Bovidae family members, or the animals with horns names, which includes sheep, cows, antelopes, and goats. Horns protrude from the skull, and they are composed of a bony core sheathed in the keratin, a similar material, which makes up our fingernails.

Antelope must always be on the lookout for danger, as they make a hearty meal for many predators—leopards, lions, civets, hyenas, wild dogs, cheetahs, and pythons—depending on species and location. Large birds of prey may take young calves.

Switching out or modifying fences so that pronghorn can crawl under, rather than jump over, makes a huge difference. The Nature Conservancy has already started modifying fences at our Matador Ranch in Montana, taking down miles of woven wire fencing and replacing it with wildlife-friendly fencing.Apr 27, 2020
